Hi Everyone, Happy August! Welcome to my year-round Halloween blog. I am constantly making art of some kind and because of that, I find making miniatures gives me a bit of a break from my bigger projects. This month while walking through Dollar Tree. I came across some mini-cats in the toy section and I thought those would be cute, as black cats with the exception of the third cat, which is gray, which came from a left over project. Let's get started!
Art Supplies
Spray paint: Black and Orange
Acrylic paint: yellow, burnt umber, light pink, gray and apricot (light orange)
Acrylic paint pens: black and white
Detail paint brushes
Exacto knife
Glue: tacky glue and Mod Podge
Masking tape
Foam Clay
Clay tools: small plastic cutting board, clear small roller and sculpting tool.
Items from Dollar Tree: Mini pumpkins, Mini cats, and mini hay bales
Halloween washi tape
Step 1
I spray painted the 2 cats with black spray paint. I used the masking tape to stick the cats and the pumpkins on the tape because I did not want them to blow over from the pressure of the spray paint. After they were dry, I used the white paint pen to draw in the eyes and then painted the eyes yellow, the ears a light pink and the nose a dark gray just to give the face a little definition. Next, I used the exacto knife to cut out the top of the pumpkin and carved out some of the foam. Then I spray painted the pumpkin with orange spray paint. I did find the spray paint left a bit of a sticky finish, but I covered it with mod podge and it allowed it not to feel sticky anymore. I painted the inside of the pumpkin with apricot paint and it really looked like pumpkin guts. Last, I painted the stem brown.
Step 2
Next is foam clay time. I made a Halloween hat and bow for the black cat and a cloak for the gray cat. If you haven't guessed yet, the gray cat is a "Headless Horsemen"-inspired miniature.
Step 3
Lastly, finish touches: After the foam clay dried for 24 hours, I painted the hat and bow orange and I used the black paint pen to make strips on the hat and polka dots on the bow. For the cloak, I painted that black and dry brush gray over the cloak so that you can see the details. I also spray-painted another pumpkin. I drew a creepy pumpkin face with a black paint pen and painted the eyes and mouth with yellow acrylic paint as it is for the headless cat. I also use a black paint pen to a lines on the pumpkin. I went back and forth with orange paint and watered down brown paint, to give the pumpkin more definition, and I painted the stem brown. For the mini bale of hay, I podged the hay because it was a bit sheddy. I glued the Halloween washi around the bale of hay. I glued the black cat with the bow and hat to the top of the hay. I put the gray cat on top of the creepy pumpkin. Last, I stuck the other black cat inside the pumpkin and glued the top of the pumpkin on the cat's head. I made sure to mod podge everything to protect the pieces. I think they turned out so cute!
Well all finished! I hope you enjoyed this month's year-around Halloween Blog.
